Language Acquisition Exam 2 Practice

This question tests the idea that being bilingual might boost certain thinking skills, but that boost isn’t guaranteed or universally found. Some research shows bilinguals perform better on cognitive control tasks—things like inhibiting distractions, switching between tasks, and maintaining relevant information—and there are also hints of advantages in understanding others’ perspectives (theory of mind). However, many studies fail to replicate these benefits, effects are often small, and results vary depending on the tasks used, the people studied, and study design. So the debate centers on whether there is a real, reliable bilingual advantage, or if observed effects depend on specific conditions and methodological choices. The best answer captures this nuance: there is some evidence for enhanced cognitive control, but findings are debated and not universally replicated. The other statements overstate certainty or misstate the consensus about IQ, performance direction, or theory of mind.
